Check out how many Solar PV projects have been installed under the Feed in Tariff (FiT) program? You contributed in this....

Do you know how many Solar PV projects have been installed under the Feed in Tariff (FiT) program?

914 Solar PV projects!
About 292MW Solar PV projects in terms of installed capacity!

If you have no idea about FiT. It is a program where rakyat contribute 1.6% KWTBB of their TNB bill amount to SEDA.

SEDA uses the collected fund to compensate those who invest and sell Renewable Energy (including Solar energy) to TNB.

If you have no idea about MW.. A 2MW of power supply can cover the electricity supply for a Condominium comprising about 700 units of houses.

The following is the breakdown… In fact Mysuria is the FiT Solar PV system installed on the residential rooftop.

Data from SEDA website.

Back to 2011 when the Government incorporated SEDA and talked about Renewable Energy (RE).

Not many people are aware or understand about it. But those who know, quietly applied and invested.

Now this group of people already got their Return of Investment, and are enjoying decent income from selling electricity to TNB under the FiT program…

I was in the RE industry that time. Trying to share this info and benefit with friends and relatives.

BUT, the majority of them felt it is another con job by the Government…

Most Malaysians are having the same mindset though..

“Why would I want to apply for the loan, pay interest to the bank and install this bloody expensive Solar PV system?”

“Not worth it one! In the end, you help the bank make money from your loan interest only!”

Today, these people can only be the contributor (the 1.6% KWTBB) to those who invested in their RE projects.

Now slightly better! Getting more people who heard about Solar PV. They intend to install, and want to sell Solar energy to TNB..

But the FiT quota (for Solar) was already finished a long time ago…

Selling electricity to TNB has become history.

Now we can only install Solar PV systems for self usage, and IF there is excess Solar energy you can export to TNB to offset your future TNB bill amount..

We call this Net Energy Metering (NEM) program. It is also based on quota available.

Malaysia is already in NEM 3.0. Compared to NEM 2.0 the difference is in how TNB “value” the excess solar energy you export to them.

The “value” now is at a rate lower than the rate of electricity TNB sold to you.

The good news is that for Solar PV systems installed for houses, TNB values the solar energy you export to them at the same rate of electricity they sold to you.

Again, it is based on quota. No one knows what will happen in the future, NEM 4.0 or some other program.

BUT, with the global fuel cost hike, war etc, it is likely that we will need to pay more for each unit of electricity we use.

In fact, for people who run business, TNB already adjusted the Imbalance Cost Pass Through (ICPT) to RM0.037 per kWh.

Mean for factories or shop lots etc business premises, your tariff rate already increased.

Many people already regret that they missed the FiT quota, NEM 1.0 quota, and NEM 2.0 quota.

If you're a high electricity consumer, and financially ok, it is worth it to spend some time to do some calculation or evaluation on installing Solar PV system for your house, factory, or shop lot…

Doing so, you can pay lesser of the 1.6% KWTBB, you use your own solar electricity which the cost is much cheaper than when you pay to TNB.
